The Margravial Opera House is considered to be the most beautifully preserved baroque opera house in Europe. Margravine Wilhelmine commissioned one of the most
famous families of theatre architects, the Bolognese Giuseppe Galli Bibiena, and his son, Carlo, to design its interior. With a depth of 27 metres, the stage of this opera house was the largest
one in Germany until 1871 - a superlative, which also drew Richard Wagner's attention to Bayreuth.
Since 2012 it registered as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site.

At the moment it is not able to visit the Opera House because of rehabilitation but from 2013 May there will be a provisorial World Cultural Heritage information centre. It will include an exhibition of architecture and virtual presentations among other things. Also you will have a look at the current rehabilitation works.

Residence of the Margraves, Margrave Friedrich and the Prussian Princess Wilhelmine, sister of Frederick the Great, who were the dominating figures in 18th
century Bayreuth. The New Palace was built in just two years (1753-1754), by the renowned French builder Saint-Pierre. Showpieces of the Palace are the Garden Rooms, the Cedar Room, the Music
Room and the famous Cabinet of Fragmented Mirrors.

The large park of the Eremitage east of the city - once a retreat from the excesses of court life - is the site of the Old Palace with its Inner Grotto,
beautiful fountains and the fairytale-like orangerie with its Sun Temple, crowned by Apollo.

Garden Museum Fantaisie Palace and Park

The Fantaisie Palace, built between 1761-1763, today hosts the first Garden Museum in Germany, with exhibits, displays and videos vividly recreating the
history of garden design. Among the highlights is the copy of the famous inlaid cabinet by the Spindler brothers.

Sanspareil Rock

These unique gardens were designed by Bayreuth's Margrave Friedrich and Margravine Wilhelmine. They created a horticultural paradise on a literary theme set amidst bizarre rock formations. This design which was way ahead of its time was later to form the basis for a new era of garden creation in which "Nature itself ... is the architect" as Margravine Wilhelmine wrote in 1749.
Not far away, forming a charming counterpart to the gardens, is the medieval castle of Zwernitz. From the castle's tower, there are magnificent panoramic views
over the Fränkische Schweiz.

Palace Church and Tower 
From 1753 to 1758 Margrave Friedrich and Margravine Wilhelmine had a court chapel built in the very centre of Bayreuth. In accordance with their wishes both were buried together with their
daughter Friederike, Duchess of Württemberg, in a vault created by Carl Philipp von Gontard. Bright and airy interior design by French master builder Joseph Saint-Pierre is definitely worth
seeing. Extraordinary decoration is also exquisite rococo stucco seilling designed by the Italian Giovanni Battista Pedrozzi.
The octagonal bell tower built in 1656 on the site of a much older construction was designed by Caspar Fischer. The tower commonly referred to as the "Schlossturm" has long been a landmark of the city of Bayreuth. A unique feature is the ramp built alongside the winding spiral staircase for the transportation of goods. The lovingly furnished guard room affords wonderful panoramic views over the rooftops of the city to the Fichtelgebirge.
